That was an informative and accurate description of the two kinds of writing!

I've found since starting on Substack that I am burned out of the academic writing style, and I find the more casual and stream-of-consciousness Substack writing to be refreshing. (Though I'd probably miss academic writing, too, if I put it down for too long!)

When I do article critiques, I often get asked to publishba formal criticism (as a letter to the editor about the article, or even as a PubPeer post). Sometimes I do, but since it takes so much longer (even to do the initial rewrite when I already know the points I want to make), it's not always something I have capacity for! At the moment I'd rather spend the time on more Substack posts :)

We need both: the rapid and peer-reviewed publications. (I almost wrote rabid) written in different styles, but that is difficult because you'd need to switch mindsets. That said, there should be space for humorous writing in peer-reviewed articles.
